Facial Injections Commonly Asked Questions

Coastal dental care

Our Coastal Dental Care practices at Kingscliff and Banora Point offer facial injections. For many, this is not a treatment they commonly associate with dentistry. Although, facial injections can be used by dentists to treat oral health issues (e.g. teeth grinding), they can also provide the treatment for aesthetic reasons.

To get a better understanding of facial injections, and why dentists are highly qualified to carry out the treatment, we put it to our dentists. Dr Sonia Campbell and Dr Bethany Mylchreest answer some of their patients most common questions about facial injections below.

What treatment options for facial injections do you offer?

Dr Sonia:

At Coastal Dental Care Kingscliff, we offer muscle relaxing injections for therapeutic and aesthetic treatments in all areas of the head and neck.

Patients who grind their teeth or experience headaches from muscle tension find the benefits of injectable muscle relaxants helpful in easing their pain. Those who display a lot of gum when smiling can make use of the same muscle relaxants to lower the upper lip and reduce the amount of gum visible.

For those who wish to improve the health and appearance of their skin, the same muscle relaxant works to reduce creasing of the skin. Such areas might be the forehead, around the eyes and between the eyebrows. Best results are achieved in conjunction with some resurfacing treatments like laser, microdermabrasion, micro-needling or chemical peels. However, sun protection is the most important factor in reducing the ageing process!

Dr Bethany:

At Coastal Dental Care Banora Point, we offer anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler injections.

Anti-wrinkle injections can act to smooth lines around the eyes, nose, lips and forehead. The injections contain botulinum toxin, a pharmaceutical grade purified protein that works by blocking neurotransmitters in target muscles. Thus, reducing the strength of muscle contraction. By injecting small amounts of this material, the muscle contraction is relaxed and the overlying skin smoothes out.

It can also be used for therapeutic applications, such as night time tooth grinding, as it relaxes the hyperactive muscles of the face which can contribute to this problem.

Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that is naturally present as a vital component of our skin. Like collagen and elastin, hyaluronic acid is lost as we age, resulting in a loss of volume and support for the skin, which causes sagging, grooves and lines on the face.

In addition to restoring volume, hyaluronic acid hydrates and can improve the condition of the skin. By injecting dermal fillers, we can restore this volume and smooth out various depressions to regain a more youthful appearance or correct various defects like thin, asymmetrical lips.

Who can get facial injections?

Most people are able to get facial injections. A thorough medical history will be taken on consultation prior to any treatment in order to provide the safest and most appropriate treatment for each individual. However, there are some situations where treatment is precluded or where precautions must be taken.

People who should not get injectables:

  • Pregnant and breast-feeding women
  • People who have a known hypersensitivity to Botulinum toxin A or lactose, milk proteins or albumin, or anti-wrinkle injections
  • People who recently used certain antibiotics as they can interfere with the action of anti-wrinkle injections
  • People who have coagulation disorders or those on anticoagulant therapy are at greater risk of bruising from facial injections
  • People with existing scar tissue or with a susceptibility to keloid scarring should consider dermal fillers with caution
  • People with neuropathic issues should consider anti-wrinkle injectables with caution

When would you recommend getting facial injections? Is there a recommended age bracket?

A good time to start treatment is when you can see lines at rest. This should not be confused with normal movement. Muscle relaxing injections can be used between the ages of 18 and 65.

How much do facial injections cost?

This can vary depending on the area or muscles to be treated and the severity of the problem. Treatment usually starts from around $200. A quote can be provided at an initial consultation.

Why can a dentist give facial injections?

Dentists have a greater knowledge of facial anatomy than most other health practitioners and are used to administering painless injections. Any dentist offering this treatment will have received extensive training in the area.

We can incorporate this treatment with your regular check-ups and dental treatment. Thus, saving time and avoiding the stigma of going to a cosmetic clinic.

How long do facial injections last?

The amount of time facial injectables last, varies from individual to individual. Generally, the effects may last anywhere from weeks to months.

Over time, as the muscles become more relaxed, the treatments can be spread further apart. In general, facial injections typically last between 3-6 months before normal function returns completely. Dermal fillers are temporary, lasting between 3-12 months before normal facial contours return.

Do facial injections hurt?

Most patients report nothing more than a little sting and say it is much easier than having a dental injection. Some people may feel a slight discomfort as the needle enters the skin. They may prefer to apply a topical anaesthetic cream or an ice pack to the skin before treatment.

Dentists can also offer dental anaesthetics prior to some filler treatments so the area is numbed before administering dermal fillers.
