Converting the entire surface of the tooth, porcelain crowns can provide a number of benefits to patients. These benefits aid with both the aesthetic and functional nature of the tooth. Increased strength and stability are the major structural advantages provided by porcelain crowns. This method of treatment also produces aesthetic results with the dental crown matching the colour, texture and translucency as your existing teeth.
Not all dental crowns are fabricated from porcelain. It actually depends on which tooth is being treated and the reason for treatment. For instance if it’s one of your back teeth or you grind your teeth, you may want a crown made of something stronger than porcelain, such as zirconia or gold.
A dental crown takes one or two treatments. The first treatment is when the tooth is prepared for a crown and then an impression is taken. The impression is sent off to a laboratory where your permanent restoration will be fabricated.
In the meantime a temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth until you come back for your second appointment.
At your second appointment the temporary crown will be removed and your porcelain or metal crown will be cemented onto the tooth.
Some dental surgeries will be able to make the crown immediately following the preparation of the tooth. The crown can then be inserted in a single appointment saving multiple trips to the dental office.
If looked after properly, a dental crown can last many years. Keep in mind that while porcelain restorations are stain resistant they do require the same dental care as your natural teeth.
A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It comprises of a false tooth attached to one or more dental crowns. The treatment process for a dental bridge is similar to a dental crown, except multiple teeth may be prepared for dental crowns.
